After two weeks of competition the Canada Winter Games has officially closed its doors for the 2015 edition.

Quebec finished first overall with 141 medals (62 gold, 39 silver, 40 bronze), Ontario took second place with 112 medals (47 gold, 40 silver, 25 bronze) and British Columbia finished in third place with 88 medals (22 gold, 33 silver, 33 bronze).

Saskatchewan finished fifth overall with a total of 28 medals with six gold, eight silver and 14 bronze medals; five more than their 2011 total.

No local competitor found the podium at the Canada Winter Games, however they all represented the province exceptionally well with Mitchell Dales (Melville) finishing just off the podium in fourth place with the Carson Ackerman men’s curling team, where he played as the third.

Madison Tocher (Esterhazy) also had a fourth place finish at the Games. Her and her figure skating dance partner Marty Haubrich (Dubuc) finished their Pre-Novice Dance competition with a total score of 39.64 (15.97 Pattern, 23.67 Free), less than four points behind the bronze medallists and fellow Team Saskatchewan members Alexander Hopkins (Saskatoon) and Tori Shmon (Saskatoon).

Nicki Nagy (Melville) of Skate Yorkton finished eighth place in the Figure Skating Pre-Novice Female singles competition with a combined score of 75.36 after she followed up her 24.85 in the Short Program with a 50.51 in the Free Program.

Shayanne Bear (Whitewood) took home 12th place honours in the Figure Skating Novice Female singles competition with a total score of 76.73 after scores of 30.96 (Short Program) and 45.77 (Free).

Madison Neufeld (Yorkton) and the rest of the members of Team Saskatchewan finished fifth overall in the Team Competition for Synchronized Swimming. Neufeld also placed 47th overall in the Synchronized Swimming Figures competition with a score of 65.915.

Clarizze Perpetua (Melville) and Team Saskatchewan placed eighth overall in the Female Team Squash competition with a 1-5-1 record. Perpetua won two of her seven personal encounters.

Hockey players Carson Welke (Yorkton), McKenzie Welke (Yorkton, Tristyn DeRoose (Ceylon), Carson Sass (Melville), Jake Kustra (Yorkton) and Logan Foster (Kamsack) were all members of the Team Saskatchewan men’s hockey team that had a less-than-impressive outing at the 2015 Canada Winter Games, going 0-3 in the round-robin before defeating Newfoundland and Labrador in the qualification game 4-1 for a spot in the quarterfinals.

Team Saskatchewan then got ran over by Ontario 9-0 before defeating New Brunswick 3-2 to finish in seventh place.

McKenzie Welke had two goals, one assist and 10 PIM in the tournament to lead all local players while Logan Foster had two assists and two PIM.

Tristyn DeRoose had a shorthanded game winning goal against Newfoundland and six PIM while Carson Welke had one assist and four PIM.

Jake Kustra scored one goal but had a total of 30 PIM for Team Saskatchewan while defensive defenceman Carson Sass didn’t find the score sheet but did pick up two PIM.

The next Canada Games will be the 2017 Canada Summer Games in Winnipeg, Manitoba. The next Canada Winter Games will be held in 2019 in Red Deer, Alberta.
