The Sacred Heart Saints senior girls’ volleyball team did everything right this past weekend at the SHSAA 4A 鶹ýAV Region playoff going 2-1 in the round-robin before ultimately falling to a much older and more experienced Esterhazy squad in the semi-finals.

The Lady Saints opened the 2015 鶹ýAV Region playoffs against the Indian Head Broncos, dropping the first set 19-25 before finding their groove in the second and third sets, winning 25-12 and 25-13 for their first match win of the competition.

Kamsack was up next and the Lady Saints picked up right where they left off against Indian Head, taking the first set 25-18 and the second set 25-17 to move to 2-0.

That set up a battle of the undefeated teams in their final Pool A matchup against Lumsden. The Lady Saints held the lead for much of the first set but simply could not find a way to close it out resulting in a 23-25 first set loss.

Sacred Heart bounced back with a 25-18 second set win but simply ran out of gas in the third set, losing 17-25.

The loss resulted in the Saints having to play the top team from Pool B – 鶹ýAV Region hosts Esterhazy – in the semi-finals and although they battled hard, the young Saints were simply outmatched and overpowered by the older, more experienced Esterhazy side falling in straight sets 14-25, 14-25.

Following the completion of their season, Lady Saints head coach Perry Enns told Yorkton This Week that he was proud of the way his young team played all season long. “Overall it was a great season,” offered Enns. “Starting the year with eight rookies meant it would be a growing year, and looking back I am amazed at how much this team has grown.

“As a team we made the playoffs in every tournament we played in and individually all of the players improved so much.”
