The Sacred Heart Lady Saints opened the 2015 SHSAA soccer season with a second place finish at their home tournament this past weekend, picking up a pair of wins and finishing with a record of 2-1.
Sacred Heart鈥檚 three veteran players led the way in their tournament opening win over their Gladstone Avenue rival from the YRHS, as Kendra Varjassy (four goals), Justine Zarowny (two goals) and Allison Berge (two goals) all had multi-goal efforts in a 9-1 win. 鈥淭hose three girls, they鈥檙e our leaders,鈥 offered Lady Saint head coach Alfredo Bermudez. 鈥淭hese are girls that have played club soccer all their lives and they are the ones that are going to be leading the team this year and I know they鈥檒l do a good job.鈥
Also scoring in the tournament opener for the Saints was Cattlin Haas.
The second game of the tournament saw the Saints run into their first trouble of the season as they fell 9-6 to a strong Prince Albert Carlton squad.
Varjassy and Zarowny once again led the offence for the Lady Saints with both players netting a hat-trick in a game that coach Bermudez felt wasn鈥檛 a negative result despite the score. 鈥淚n that game, it might sound funny but I didn鈥檛 care about the loss. What I did care about is the improvement,鈥 said Bermudez, continuing, 鈥淚n the first 25 minutes of the first half I wasn鈥檛 happy because the girls didn鈥檛 play their best. After that the kind of woke up and scored a few goals.
鈥淭he second half we played well and in the end we scored six goals. Against a team like that, that鈥檚 a lot. 9-6 and a three goal differential, yes, but what I saw that was great was the improvement from one half to the next.鈥
The Saints wrapped up their home tournament with an 11-0 shutout win over the Estevan Elecs. Varjassy pushed thru for her second four goal performance and third hat-trick of the tournament to again lead the Lady Saint offence, while Zarowny and Berge also bulged the back of the net three times in the win.
Haas鈥 second goal of the tournament rounded out the scoring for the Lady Saints in their final game.
The next action for the Sacred Heart Lady Saints soccer team will be this weekend, when they travel to Moose Jaw for their second tournament of the season.
