A tough 2015 season for the YRHS Lady Raiders volleyball team came to an end on Saturday at the 2015 SHSAA 5A 鶹ýAV Region tournament, which was hosted by the YRHS.
The Lady Raiders needed at least one win in their first three games to move on to the playoff round, however straight sets losses to Swift Current (18-25, 20-25) and Weyburn (10-25, 14-25) and a three set loss to Moose Jaw Peacock (26-24, 16-25, 22-25) resulted in an early departure for the Regional tournament hosts, ending the Lady Raiders’ season on an eight game losing streak going back to their last regular season tournament in Swift Current.
But while they failed to win at the Regional competition, veteran grade 12 setter Emma Teneycke felt the team put together some of their strongest volleyball of the season. “We had two good, strong games and we were working together really well as a team and we had a lot of digs and strong hits, but we couldn’t get points when we needed to,” offered Teneycke, adding the loss to Peacock was the toughest because they knew that was the round-robin game they needed to win. “I think that would have been the one we should have won, but we tried our best and played as hard as we could every point and I’m happy with the way we finished off.”
Teneycke’s teammate and fellow grade 12 veteran Courtney Matychuk echoed her teammate’s words, adding that while they didn’t win, they didn’t feel bad about their performance either. “It wasn’t anything to be ashamed of. We still had lots of good plays in there,” said Matychuk. “We got to show a lot of the skills that we learnt this season, so it wasn’t something to be sad about.
“We did play good games, we just came up short. As a team we worked together pretty well but we just fell short.”
With their high school volleyball season – and careers - now over, Teneycke and Matychuk, as well as four other grade 12 players (Jessica Lutz, Brett Lindsay, Olivia Tomcala and Hunter Frankfurt) will turn their attention to either club volleyball or high school basketball, however the lack of high school volleyball will still leave a hole in their hearts. “We’re really sad that it’s over now,” said Teneycke. “We’ve had Deedee Walker and Miss Somogyi (Rae-Lynn) as coaches for three years now and they’ve really grown on us and we’ve really enjoyed playing for them and we love playing for this school (YRHS), but we still have club volleyball left so that makes it a little easier to take.”
