It’s an important season for the Yorkton Kinsmen Terriers midget AA team as they look to defend their provincial title.

With new head coach Brad Haberman in place and many returning players, the team hit the ice for their first game action last weekend. And they definitely started off on a positive foot - well, skate.

The Kinsmen Terriers played their first pair of games last weekend in the Â鶹´«Ã½AV Saskatchewan Minor Hockey League when the Estevan Apex Bruins were in town to face off.

The first game on Friday night, held at the Kinsmen Arena, ended in a 4-4 tie after three periods of play.

In the first period, the Kinsmen Terriers started things off early with a goal from Ethan Evanovich less than three minutes in.

But Estevan would come back to score two of their own before the period ended.

In the second period, both teams added one goal onto their score. Yorkton’s came from Massen Ziola on a power play. The second would end 3-2 for Estevan.

In the third, Yorkton’s Evan Mattatal and Tyler Shankowsky would each score for the Kinsmen Terriers.

Yorkton had a 4-3 lead up until the last couple of minutes, when Estevan scored on a power play. The game would end 4-4, and the two teams would leave the ice in hopes of gaining the W the next day.

On Sunday, the puck dropped at 3:00 at the FAA. This contest would have a much different ending, as the Kinsmen Terriers took the win 9-2.

They came out strong and hard, with Josh Peppler scoring the first of three goals in the first period. Massen Ziola would score the second goal short handed, and Michael Coleridge scored the third on a power play.

In the second period, Ashton Shewchuk and Peppler added another two for the Kinsmen Terriers, while Estevan would sneak one in on a power play.

The third period started with a score of 5-1 for Yorkton. But Coleridge, Anthony Roebuck, Tyler Shankowsky (PP) and Vaughn Wilgosh would each add one for the Kinsmen Terriers. Estevan got their second goal on a power play with four minutes remaining in the period.

By the end of the game, the shots on goal were 43-40 in favour of the Estevan Apex Bruins. Spencer Welke proved to be a strong goalie for the Kinsmen Terriers, as he blocked 41 of 43 shots.

The Kinsmen Terriers walk away from their opening weekend with three of four possible points. Although it’s early in the season, they sit in second place in their league of 13 teams.

Their next action will be on Saturday when they host the Regina Vics at the Farrell Agencies Arena at 7:30 p.m.
