The Yorkton Midget Kinsmen Terriers dropped a pair of home games this past weekend at the Farrell Agencies Arena, 3-2 to Weyburn and 10-6 to Estevan.
The two losses give the Kinsmen Terriers nine straight defeats and a woeful 4-23-3 record in the SSMHL midget league.
Saturday
Paul Jewhurst put the home side on the board first. The Melville product collected the puck and snapped it past Weyburn goaltender Chantz Vinck to make it 1-0 for Yorkton just over eight minutes into the game.
Weyburn's Lucas Cole evened the score late in the first to make it 1-1 after the opening frame.
Yorkton would retake the lead midway through the second period, however, when Kylan Shea's blast from the point found its way past Vinck for Shea's sixth of the season and a 2-1 Kinsmen Terrier lead.
The visiting Wings would once again even the score. This time it was Andrew Baker who beat Bo Loster to make it 2-2 after 40 minutes.
Weyburn's Cole would score the only goal of the third period, his second of the game, to give Weyburn just their sixth win of the season, this time 3-2 over the host Yorkton Kinsmen Terriers.
Sunday afternoon
While Saturday's game against Weyburn was somewhat of a defensive battle, Sunday's game against Estevan proved to be an offensive showcase.
Estevan would take an early lead with Kyle Salaway's first of two on the day.
The Bruins would then strike twice in just 15 seconds. Tyler Hengen's goal at 8:25 of the first was quickly followed by a Preston Hutt marker to make it 3-0 for the visitors and it looked like the route was on.
But someone forgot to tell Justin Poirier.
The Kinsmen Terriers leading scorer raised the Bruins offense, scoring two goals of his own in 12 seconds, three seconds quicker than the previous two Estevan goals.
Yorkton would even the score before the end of the first period when Cody Dubas, a bantam call-up, wired a shot that Estevan goalie Landon Audet could not stop for the third Kinsmen Terrier goal of the period and his first at the midget level to make it 3-3 after one period of play.
Salaway, much like he did in the first period, would get the Bruins on the board in a hurry to open the middle frame.
Matt Bill would give the Bruins a two goal lead less than a minute after the Salaway goal to make it 5-3, but Josh Rohatynsky cut the Bruins lead in half with his sixth of the season with 14:37 remaining in the frame.
Hunter Arnold evened the score for the third time in the game just over seven minutes later with his first of the season, however the Bruins would add two late goals off the sticks of Dylan Lay and Hengen to take a 7-5 lead into the locker room after 40 minutes.
The visiting Bruins solidified their lead with a Colton Gingras goal at 2:57 of the third period and a Kaelan Holt goal at 9:13 of the third before Brayden Miller made it 9-6 with his seventh of the season.
Lay would put one more past Terriers netminder Bo Loster for the Bruins tenth goal of the game to give the visiting Bruins a 10-6 win.
While it's never good to surrender 10 goals in a game, Kinsmen Terriers head coach Noel Budz feels that his team put forth a much stronger effort than the last time they played Estevan. "They took it to us bad the last time they played us and beat us 11-1," stated Budz. "Tonight the guys had a much better effort. Guys are trying to win, they're battling hard and you can't take anything away from them for that."
Budz also mentioned the negatives. Such as allowing 10 goals and making life difficult for their own goalie, Bo Loster. "We made it tough on him (Bo Loster, Terriers goalie) by getting our own bodies in front of him rather than trying to clear out their bodies. We just need a little more urgency in our own zone. We need to make it easier for our goalie to see the puck. If he can't see it he can't stop it."
Next action
The next action for the Yorkton Kinsmen Terriers (4-23-3) will be Monday, February 10 when they visit the Regina Wild (12-10-6).
The next home action for the Terriers will be Saturday February 15 when they host the visiting Notre Dame Hounds (12-13-1). Game time is set for 7:30p.m. at the Farrell Agencies Arena.
