The Yorkton Kinsmen Terriers of the SSMHL Midget Division continue to hold down first place in the 14-team midget 'AA' league after dropping a 5-3 to the Regina Rangers but rebounding to beat the Moose Jaw Warriors 3-1 and tie the Notre Dame Hounds 1-1 in Wilcox's oversized ice surface.

Rocked by Rangers

The Queen City wasn't kind to the Yorkton Kinsmen Terriers on Friday night.

The Terriers opened the scoring Friday night with a Tayon Metzler goal, his 14th of the season, only to have Regina's Jordan Kazymyra score not once but twice in just over a minute to give the hometown Rangers a 2-1 lead.

However that lead was short lived as Grayson Neufeld potted his first of two on the night less than a minute later to make it 2-2.

The score remained 2-2 until just over five minutes into the second period when the Rangers regained the lead on a Mitchell Braddock marker.

Regina would double their lead late in the period when Colby Brandt beat Terrier netminder Carter Park for the fourth Ranger goal of the game and a 4-2 Regina lead.

The two clubs would trade goals in the third period with Neufeld finding the back of the net for the second time on the night while Carter Budzak put the nail in the Yorkton coffin with an insurance goal with just two seconds left in the game to make it a 5-3 final.

"Honestly we'd like to have this one back," offered Kinsmen Terrier head coach Noel Budz. "We didn't play as well or as disciplined as we needed to here to get the win."

The Kinsmen Terrier powerplay unit might not have been super effective on Friday night, however it was a completely different story on Saturday in Moose Jaw.

The Terriers got a powerplay goal in each period, first from Metzler in the first period, followed by a second period powerplay goal by Jarvis Gelowitz and an early third frame extra man marker off the stick of captain Kholten Shewchuk while the Warriors could only find a way to put one puck past Terrier netminder Alex Geddes in the 3-1 Yorkton win.

The Kinsmen Terriers also saw some powerplay success Sunday night in Notre Dame. With the score 1-0 Hounds and time ticking down in the game, Kinsmen Terrier head coach Noel Budz made the decision to remove Geddes from the net in favour of an extra attacker.

A Hounds penalty gave Yorkton a 6-on-4 and, after a blocked Bret Melnychuk point shot was kept inside the Notre Dame zone, the Terriers capitalized when Metzler scored his third goal in as many games and 16th of the season with just 21 seconds left via the powerplay to bring the Terriers even and salvage a point with the 1-1 draw. "It's always nice to get that goal. It doesn't matter who scored as long as it goes in," quipped coach Budz via a phone interview an hour after the game. "It wasn't pretty, just a rebound and a wide open net on the back door but we'll take it."

Next action

The Yorkton Kinsmen Terriers (8-4-1) were in White City Monday night for a game against the Prairie Storm, however scores and stats were unavailable at press time.

The next action for the Yorkton Kinsmen Terriers will be this Saturday, November 15 when they host the Prairie Storm for a 4:00p.m. game at the Farrell Agencies Arena.
