KCI senior girls basketball team ends season at regionals

The Kamsack Comprehensive Institute senior girls basketball team ended its season at the regional competition in Indian Head March 17 and 18.

聽 聽 聽 聽 聽 聽 The Kamsack Comprehensive Institute senior girls basketball team ended its season at the regional competition in Indian Head March 17 and 18.

聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 The top four teams in the region competed were in Inidan Head where Kamsack lost to Indian Head, 46-28 and then to Maple Creek, 53-48.

聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 鈥淭he games were close and we were plagued by injury and illness,鈥 said Claire Bishop, a coach. 鈥淲e were not at our peak.鈥

聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 One key member of the team, Allison Thomsen, sprained an ankle in the last three minutes of the game, in fact it was the last three minutes of her high school basketball career, because she is one of four students who are graduating.

聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 The Indian Head team had qualified to advance to HOOPLA 2017 that was held at Regina on the weekend.

聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 In order to get to the regional competition, the Kamsack team had first played at districts and then had advanced to the conferences in Tisdale on March 10 and 11.

聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 At the 3A northern conferences were the six top teams from the districts. Kamsack had defeated Sandy Bay 58-38 and then lost to Yorkton Sacred Heart 32-19.

聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 Graduating from the team with Thomsen, a captain, are another captain, Allison Placatka, plus Jalayna Bielecki and Alanna Finnie.

聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 鈥淭hese are an excellent bunch of young ladies,鈥 Bishop said, explaining that the season had begun at the end of November.

聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 Helping Bishop coach the team were Dave Placatka and Louise Sumner, a former University of Regina basketball player.

聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 During the season the team had attended four tournaments and won silver at the tournament in Melville in December.
