The YRHS Raiders junior football team snapped off its third straight win in Regina Minor Football League action this past Saturday, downing the visiting Regina Mounties 29-11 at Yorkton's Century Field.
Quarterback Matthew Balysky led the offence with two touchdowns, while running back Brody Popowich chipped in with a score of his own.
On defence it was safety Skylar Soldat picking up his second interception of the season that led the way, while Jordan Stewart did his part as well, pressuring the Regina quarterback and running back all game long.
But give credit where credit is due, the Mounties didn't look like a team without a win this season, sticking with the young Raiders early on; something that junior Raiders head coach Al Kyle attributes to Regina's ability to scout the Yorkton team earlier in the season. "It's a tough thing, playing Regina teams. They can come in and kind of scout you and see what you are doing," suggested the first year head coach. "I could tell that, facing their defence, they had seen us before and of course we had not seen them.
"That gave them a little bit of an advantage but we made some adjustments and by the end of the game we were able to get off some big runs and get some points on the board."
The 29-11 win is the third victory in the row for the junior Raiders and improves their record to 3-1 on the season, their only loss coming in the first game of the season, a 40-8 drubbing at the hands of the Greenall Jr. Griffins. "I was a little nervous early on," mentioned the junior Raiders head coach, referring to the first game of the season. "We had a pretty big loss in the first game of the year but every week the boys are building up and I'm hoping we can keep it rolling into next week's game."
Next week's game will be in Regina, when the YRHS Jr. Raiders (3-1) take on the Regina Stampeders (1-3). Kickoff is set for 5:45p.m. at Leibel Field.
