The Yorkton Storm Swim Club sent two swimmers to the fourth annual Optimist Prairie Cup in Regina this past weekend.

The meet was designed to prepare the competitors for the upcoming championship type meets that they will be encountering.

Preliminaries were swam in the morning, followed by finals for the top eight swimmers in each event that night.

Jacob Baker had a successful meet taking time off in three of his four swims. Baker also made it to the final of the 100m Breaststroke where he placed sixth.

Jennifer Haczkewicz also experienced success at the Regina meet.

She managed to make the finals in six of her swims, cracking the podium in the 50m Backstroke and came home, an event that saw her come home with the silver.

Along the way she rewrote the YSSC record book yet again, breaking three records at the meet. She broke her own club records in the 100m and 400m Freestyle events.

Haczkewicz then followed those efforts up by breaking Gloria Liebrecht’s record in the 200m Individual Medley set in 1990. She was able to shave over 2 seconds off of Liebrecht’s 26 year old mark.

Head Coach Ashley Benko was very pleased with the results the swimmers turned in at the meet, saying: “You have to know that these two kids are swimming against university men and women in these races.

“It’s interesting to compare body size and build when the two swimmers are on the starting blocks.â€

The next action for YSSC swimmers will be next weekend in Saskatoon at the Goldfins Brainsport Winter Classic.

The three day meet will be run in the same format and feature different races and distances than the Regina meet did.
