Getting dirty on Canada Day

For some people in the Yorkton area, the Canada Day weekend for the past five years has meant getting dirty - very dirty. The 5th annual Quad Derby took place at the Redneck Rec. Land Mudpark over the long weekend.

For some people in the Yorkton area, the Canada Day weekend for the past five years has meant getting dirty - very dirty.听

The 5th annual Quad Derby took place at the Redneck Rec. Land Mudpark over the long weekend. The event acts as a fundraiser for Telemiracle. It has a variety of fun elements that people look forward to participating in every year.

Lucas Kriger, one of the event organizers, said they saw about 115 people participate this year.听

The derby takes place on Saturday of the long weekend every year. People driving ATVs, trucks, jeeps and anything else on four wheels take off from the campgrounds along a 35 km trail that loops back to the grounds. Kriger said the trail takes roughly four hours to complete - depending on how long drivers want to 鈥減lay鈥 in the mudhole.

That鈥檚 the best part of the trail - it contains a 鈥済inormous mudhole for anything on four wheels to play in,鈥 said Kriger.听

What makes the event so successful, according to Kriger, is the fact that it鈥檚 friendly to riders of all calibers. People can spend the whole weekend camping, riding the trails, observing fireworks, enjoying a BBQ 鈥 all while contributing to a great cause. 听

Kriger said for the past two years they鈥檝e been able to donate about $2,000 to Telemiracle. While they don鈥檛 have their totals calculated from this year yet, he鈥檚 anticipating that they鈥檒l be in that ballpark again.听

Like any event, it would not be possible for the Quad Derby to happen without the help of a lot of people. Kriger wanted to thank them all, including his wife Nora who helped to organize the entire event.听

Maks Construction donated a $500 cash prize for the quickest person through the bounty hole. This went to Dylan McCormick who got through in 15.25 seconds.听

Bree Rogoza made a donation to cover the barriers for the campgrounds and trails.听

Newton Landscaping supplied a water pump and hoses to fill everything with water for the event.听

Harvest Meats and听 Superstore made donations for the barbecue.听

Public Relations Canada made the posters and helped with advertising.

In addition, Kriger mentioned Shayne Yasinsky for the photos, Feebs for the 12-minute firework show, and lastly but certainly not least 鈥 the entire staff for helping with set up, running events and tearing everything back down.
