Over 300 kids took part in the 3rd Annual National Archery in the Schools tournament at the YRHS.

Saskatchewan's third annual provincial archery competition took place Saturday at the YRHS.

Participating teams included: Bert Fox (Fort Qu'Appelle), Canora Composite, Canora Junior Elementary School, Churchbridge Public School, Cochrane High School, Columbia School, Dr. Brass School, Esterhazy, Glentworth School, L.P. Miller Comprehensive School, Maude Burke School (Melfort), MC Knoll Elementary School, McLurg (Regina), Melfort Comprehensive School, Raymore, Saltcoats School, Senator Myles Venne School (LaRonge), Star City School, and the Yorkton Regional High School.

Among the competitors was Hunter Frankfurt and Brayden Jarvis of MC Knoll Yorkton and Sarah Edel of Columbia.

MC Knoll coach Leann Jarvis said it was a good day for two of her top shooters.

They each finished in top spot in their respective categories (Gr. 6-7 girls/Gr. 6 boys respectively).

Edel, representing Columbia completed the day with a fourth place finish. Coach Don Trevena said it was a pleasant surprise considering that Edel wasn't even sure she wanted to compete in the first place.

However, a little bit of encouragement from Mrs. Glenda Lazurko took care of that problem.

Her final score broke 200, said Trevena. "Mrs. Lazurko convinced here. She wasn't that comfortable."

It was Edel's first time out in provincials.

Jarvis, a 12-year-old at MC Knoll finished well in his division, he had a long wait for his shoot time and said he sorely missed getting in his usual practice time. He said he was off of his personal best and didn't feel his score was near his personal capability.

"Brayden likes to shoot against other kids," insists coach Jarvis.

He shot a 264. Previously, he has put up 286.

"It wasn't one of the best shoots I've ever done." He added that he wasn't worried, just wasn't happy with it.

Coach Jarvis said it was a great day for her Gr. 4 shooters, including Kelsey Banga, Megan Kirby, Olivia Gordon, Cailin Jarvis, all with top finishes. From Gr. 5, Payton Weinmaster, Brett Heskin and Jarvis were top finishers.

Frankfurt, who also usually finishes at the top, did it again, but wasn't happy with her score of 252.
She said the competition was "really good" but wasn't happy with her own results. Her personal best is 275.

Both felt pressure in going into the shoot as repeat archery shoot champions.
