Springside native and former Yorkton Terrier Chad Nehring has inked a two-year contract with a German hockey league.聽

The 30-year-old forward has signed on with the Fischtown Pinguins (DEL) of the German Ice Hockey League.

鈥淚t was kinda in the works for a bit,鈥 said Nehring.聽

He added that playing hockey overseas has been a plan of his for a while, but he just didn鈥檛 know when the timing would work out.聽

鈥淚t was my time to head over and start a new chapter in my career,鈥 he said.

Nehring spent last season with the American Hockey League鈥檚 Binghamton Senators. During the season, he racked up five goals and 13 assists.聽

Heading to Germany isn鈥檛 totally foreign ground for the Saskatchewan hockey player.聽

鈥淢y dad鈥檚 dad was born in Germany, so I have roots there. It鈥檚 nice to have that,鈥 he said. The contract he signed will include a German passport so he won鈥檛 be considered an import.聽

When asked about the comparison of North American hockey to German hockey, he said there aren鈥檛 too many differences.聽

鈥淭here鈥檚 a lot more room because they play on Olympic-sized ice, so there鈥檚 more room to make plays,鈥 he explained. Nehring added that his friends in the league said it鈥檚 a similar playing style to the AHL 鈥 it鈥檒l still be a pretty rough and tough game.聽

Nehring will be spending the next few weeks living in Las Vegas before he heads overseas at the end of July.
