Former Yorkton Harvest hockey player Kade Halabuza was recently named a winner of a $1000 scholarship for his involvement in the Saskatchewan Hockey Association.

Halabuza, a former student at Yorkton's Sacred Heart High School, said the scholarship was won based on "having a certain Grade average" and will be applied to the cost of university next fall.

He lives in Estevan and said he's hoping to get accepted into the University of Calgary.

He's looking at studying petroleum engineering, working with geologists, extracting oil out of the ground. Halabuza said the job demand for oil work in Estevan is high enough that it should lead to a job for him sooner rather than later.

"There's lots of opportunity for that down here in Estevan. There's lots of jobs."

The Saskatchewan Development Model Partners (Sask. Hockey Association, Sask., Midget AAA Hockey League, Sask., Junior Hockey League and the Western Hockey League) will award 24 scholarships in the amount of $1000 to the members of the SHA who are registered at the Midget AAA and/or Junior 'A' levels. One scholarship is awarded for the AAA league and one for the SJHL team.

One player from each SJHL was announced. Yorkton Terrier defenceman from last season, Kurtis Decker also won a scholarship.
