The Yorkton Exhibition had many things going for it this year. It had rides, live music, beer gardens, greasy but tasty food, etc.
But the main draw for many were the Chariot and Chuckwagon races held from Wednesday to Friday, as well as Saturday's Harness racing. All of which took place at the Cornerstone Raceway with packed grandstands each day.
Day One
Casey Peterson's outfit took home Day One's top honours with a time of 62.54 in the chuckwagon races.
Larry Salmond, who took part in the same race as Peterson, placed second overall and just over a quarter second slower than the Peterson outfit with a time of 62.72 while Steve Galloway and his ponies finished in third place overall with a time of 63.03, meaning all three outfits had an inside track on winning the three-day total if they could keep up their times over the next two days.
On the Chariot side of things it was Colleen Galloway who showed the boys how it's done, snagging the top time from everyone to place first overall with her 'A' team with a 61.29 time. Casey Peterson narrowly missed out on winning both ends of the Wednesday racing, finishing the chariot portion with a time of 61.92 while Larry Salmond also found himself in the top three again on the day with a time of 62.45.
Day Two
The Casey Peterson outfit increased their lead over the rest of the pack by claiming first place in the chuckwagon races for the second straight day. His time of 61.79 was also the fastest time of any chuckwagon outfit so far.
Colt Peterson improved on his 40th place finish from Day One, when he ran 64.08 but was saddled with 15 seconds of penalties to claim second spot on Day Two with a 62.39 time. Rounding out the top three was Shane Hue's outfit. Hue moved up eight spots from 11th to third over one day with a time of 62.93.
He couldn't do it on Day One, but he did so on Day Two as Casey Peterson proved why he's one of the best, doubling down to win the chariot title for Day Two with a sparkling time of 60.19.
Colleen Galloway's 61.29 was good enough for second on the day, despite being more than a second off of Peterson's pace, while Ross Schnell rounded out the top three in Day Two chariots with a run time of 62.07.
Day Three
The Casey Peterson outfit completed the Chuckwagon hattrick on Friday, finishing first overall for the third consecutive day with a time of 62.09. Shayne Salmond found his way into the top three with a 62.79 time while Larry Salmond's outfit finished in third place with a 62.85 run.
Overall, it was Casey Peterson's 186.42 combined time that took home first overall while Shane Hue's 190.04 and Shayne Salmond's 190.48 took home second and third respectively.
Chariot wise it was Colt Peterson who took first place on Day Three with a run of 60.44 while Casey Peterson followed him up closely at 60.95. Colleen Galloway finished in third on Day Three with a time of 61.03.
Overall it was the Casey Peterson outfit once again that took home the big prize money with a combined three day total of 183.06. Colleen Galloway finished second with a combined time of 183.73 while Larry Salmond rounded out the top three with an overall time of 187.83.
Harness Racing
There were five harness races that took place on Saturday at the Yorkton Exhibition. In race one it was Shyloh Thunder driven by Clayton Braybrook and owned by Ronald McLeod of Regina that won. Race two saw Gold Mine (Driver: Kevin Siever, Owner: Don Soloninko, Wroxton) take home the money.
In Race Three HI Zeligs Glory driven by Clayton Braybrook and owned by the same man (Kindersley) that won. Race Four saw Personal Promise, driven and owned by Clayton Braybrook come out on top while Mystery Road, driven by Kevin Siever and owned by Ronald Boehm (Yorkton) and Kevin Siever (Swift Current) that won the fifth and final race of the day.
