Cote First Nation archer wins bronze at North American Indigenous Games

A young Cote First Nation archer has returned from the North American Indigenous Games in Toronto July 15 to 23 with a bronze medal, one of a collection of 12 medals he has won since picking up the sport about a year ago.

聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 Randall Dre Friday, 13, of Kylemore, who is the son of Randy Friday of Cote First Nation and Sheryl Kayseas of Fishing Lake First Nation, won the bronze medal in Toronto, after having been selected to compete for being one of the top two archers in Saskatchewan in his age category, he said last week.

聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 Friday had won gold in the cub division at the cub category at the Assinboine River Archery Club鈥檚 annual 3-D shoot near Canora August 12 and 13 and had won gold at the Saskatchewan Indigenous Summer Games in Regina August 6 to 11.

聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 鈥淩andall was invited by No. 1 Archery and Sports in Regina to attend the Indoor Archery World Cup competition in Las Vegas in February, his mother said.

聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 Friday, who is a Grade 8 student in Wadena, says he practices with the bow about two hours a day and he is looking forward to the North American Indigenous Games that will be played in Edmonton. His goal is to one day be an Olympic competitor.

聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 鈥淩andall鈥檚 nicknames are Sniper and Young Gun,鈥 his mother said. 鈥淗e鈥檚 so calm and a very humble boy who takes pride in what he does. He is a good role model and a high achiever.鈥

聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 In addition to archery, Friday enjoys hunting, using a short flint lock gun. He is a pitcher for his baseball and fastball teams and plays hockey with the Wadena Wildcats.聽
