Sacred Heart Saints senior girls’ head coach Chris Hansen believes that the 2014/15 Lady Saints are one of the strongest teams that he has had in recent years.
“I’m really confident with some of our younger girls this year because we’ve got a couple grade 10 girls that are real athletic and really keen,” offered the head coach. “I don’t think we’ll have any superstars, I think we’ll have 11 pretty solid players that on any given day will be good.”
But while he doesn’t believe the team will have any superstars, Hansen does expect a few girls to burst out of the pack and take control of the team. “Taneisha Roussin is a grade 12 girl that will be a good leader, so is Hailey (Vitkauskas). I think they’ll be good,” suggested Hansen, adding that Roussin will most likely be looked upon to provide a little more offence than the rest.
Hansen also expects speed to play a big role on the Lady Saints this season; and with the combination of Kendra Varjassy and Justine Zarowny, the latter also a track star, speed will not be hard to find. “We’ve got to have the drives to the hoop from both Kendra (Varjassy) and Justine (Zarowny),” mentioned Hansen, continuing, “Justine will probably be our point guard bringing the ball down the court but Kendra will most likely settle in to be our other guard so we definitely have speed there.”
In fact
Hansen believes that if the speed of Zarowny and Varjassy can jell with the offensive prowess of Roussin and Vitkauskas, the Lady Saints will be hard to beat. And at the perfect time too, because after a strong season last year where the Lady Saints made it to the Regional playoffs, Hansen expects his girls to do even better. “We had a nice finish last year and graduated three players. This year we’re graduating four,” mentioned Hansen. “At some point you’ve got to stop saying it’s for the future because it has to start happening.”
