There were many amazing displays of athleticism on display at the 28th annual Student vs. Teacher benefit hockey game at the Farrell Agencies Arena on Wednesday, April Second.
The majority of which could be credited to either the students or celebrity guest and Team Teacher star forward Brett Breitkreuz, who is also a member of the Augsburger Panther of Germany's Deutsche Eishockey Liga (DEL).
And while the teachers won 6-3 despite trailing 2-0 after 20 minutes, the most impressive thing did not take place on the ice, even though the action on the ice was the reason it came to be.
No, the most impressive thing was how the community of Yorkton, as well as the surrounding areas, rallied around two of its own, Paige-Lynn Banks and Kaleb Krakalovich, to raise just under nine grand ($8,900.00) for the two to put towards their medical expenses.
The support and generosity of the community caused many people close to the two children, especially their mothers Dana Banks and Caroline Krakalovich, to break down in tears of gratefulness. But through those tears the two mothers were able to offer their heartfelt thanks to the people of Yorkton. "I'm just overwhelmed and so grateful," said an emotional Dana Banks. "Money is the number one concern when it comes to anybody getting sick and having to be away from work and everything. The generosity of everyone makes everything so much easier and it's completely overwhelming."
Kaleb's mother, Caroline, also expressed her gratitude to the people of Yorkton and its surrounding area, saying, "Thank you to everyone for having such big, generous hearts. It means a lot, thank you.
"I hope they continue doing it for other families for a long time in the future because, unfortunately, there will be a need for it."
