CCS athletes compete at Cherrydale cross-country districts

Canora Composite School (CCS) athletes competed at the Cherrydale cross-country district meet near Yorkton on October 5. In the beginner boys two-kilometre race, involving 37 runners, Rhett Ludba finished second in a personal best time of 8:59.

聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 In the beginner boys two-kilometre race, involving 37 runners, Rhett Ludba finished second in a personal best time of 8:59. Briel Beblow placed 14th in 10:17, also a personal best.

聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 The beginner girls two-kilometre race included 45 runners. Makayla Heshka came in 26th in a time of 11:33.聽

聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 A total of 38 runners were entered in the sneakers boys two-kilometre race. Taye Shukin won first place in 8:21. Matthew Makowsky finished 29th in 11.17, followed by Ty Sleeva in 30th at 11:22. Noah Prychak finished 37th (no time recorded).

聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 In the sneaker girls two-kilometre race, involving 30 runners, Sofia Tratch finished ninth in 10:14 and Jessee Kopelchuk was 20th with a time of 12:25.聽聽聽聽聽聽

聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 The weepee boys three-kilometre race included 39 runners. Lucas Latham finished fifth in a personal best time of 12:50. Porter Wolkowski placed seventhth in 13 minutes even, also a personal best.

聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 In the weepee girls three-kilometre race, out of 36 runners, Meadow Ostafie placed 16th with a time of 14:54.

聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 A total of 30 runners competed in the bantam boys three-kilometre race, and CCS athletes swept the top three placings. Clay Sleeva took the gold medal in a personal best time of 10:44. Dawson Zuravloff finished second in 11:05, a personal best, with Hudson Bailey right behind in third place at 11:07, a personal best time. Brendon Landstad finished 13th in a personal best time of 12:30.

聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 The midget boys three-kilometre race included 18 runners. Jacob Gulka placed eighth in a time of 11:51.

聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 In the senior boys five-kilometre run, which involved a total of three runners, Nathan Bucsis finished first in 20:04

聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 Anyone in midget, junior or senior placing in the top 10 in districts, qualifies for provincials in Turtleford on October 14.

聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 Gulka and Bucsis each qualified for provincials, but Gulka will be unable to attend due to prior commitments.聽

聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 Leona Kitchen, coach, said the CCS athletes have had an excellent cross-country season. 鈥淭hey have shown consistent and continued improvement, determination beyond measure, fantastic dedication, and great sportsmanship throughout season.聽 The runners get really attached to the placing at the finish line, when they also need to look at their finishing time and the personal strengths/benefits they have gained.聽

聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 鈥淢any factors can affect them on a race day, for example the amount and quality of sleep the night before, water intake, food eaten, injuries, overall health, weather, and these runners have pushed through all of these at one race or another,鈥 she said.

聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 Kitchen said the athletes have represented CCS well, and she and Thomas Lowes, coach, are hoping to send students to the provincial competition level for many years to come.
