Dozens of bowlers from throughout the province and into Manitoba will make their way to Yorkton this weekend to compete in a cash bowling tournament at the Yorkton Bowl Arena.

The tournament, which will take place on Saturday and Sunday, is the brainchild of Jennifer Kostiuk and Kristy Schafer, and is the first of its kind to take place in the city in a quarter of a century. 鈥淭his is the first one that we鈥檝e decided to put together in about 25 years,鈥 said Kostiuk, an avid bowler and co-chair of the tournament. 鈥淜risty and I put our heads together and came up with something that we thought was going to fit our smaller city and we came up with this tournament.

鈥淲e got a lot of entries in and we had a lot of interest so we figured that we were for sure going to go ahead with it and it鈥檚 turned out that we鈥檝e got between 50 and 60 entries in so far and probably about 75% of those entries are from out of town.鈥

Of those entries, Kostiuk said many boast impressive resumes such as Provincial champion, Masters Nationals champion and National medallists.

The Yorkton tournament has also drawn the interest of bowlers Kevin Clark, Len Anseth and Tracy Anseth, all of whom competed on National television at some point on TSN while competing in the Canadian Bowling Championships. 鈥淲e鈥檝e got some former CBC Champions, some former TSN Stars as we as provincial and master鈥檚 nationals champions,鈥 mentioned Kostiuk, continuing, 鈥淲e鈥檝e got a lot of national medallists as well, so to be able to attract those names and bring them here is exciting for us.鈥

The tournament will consist of three shifts (2:30p.m. Saturday, 5:30p.m. Saturday and 9:30a.m. Sunday) with a total of five games being played per bowler. Sunday afternoon will see the top eight bowlers face off in match play with the winner being crowned the champion.

Admission is free to any and all spectators.
