Cardinals saw a week of ups and downs

The past week saw a series of ups and downs for the Yorkton Cardinals in Western Major Baseball League action. The Cardinals played five games in the past week, and hold a 5-13 record at the time of print. They split those games 3-2.

The Cardinals hosted the Swift Current 57’s for a doubleheader last Wednesday and took the win in both games.

The past week saw a series of ups and downs for the Yorkton Cardinals in Western Major Baseball League action. 

The Cardinals played five games in the past week, and hold a 5-13 record at the time of print. 

They split those  games 3-2. 

Last Wednesday they hosted the Swift Current 57’s for a double header, due to a game that had been cancelled in the week prior because of weather. The Cards took the win in both of those games. 

In the first game, the Yorkton outscored the 57’s 5-4. Hank Forrest, Chance Wheatley and Dondrei Hubbard all had multi-hit games for Yorkton. Bryson Spagnuolo came on as a relief pitcher and pitched three innings for the victory. 

The second game finished 8-6 for the Cardinals. DJ Depiero threw for 2.1 innings of shutout relief for his first win of the season, and Tyler McDonald finished the game and got the save. 

Terry Zuccola was two for three with a double and three RBI at the plate. 

These two wins pushed the Cardinals’ record to 4-11. 

On Friday and Saturday, the team traveled to Weyburn for two games against the Beavers. The Cardinals fell in both games - the first by a score of 10-4, and the second 5-1. 

But on Sunday afternoon when the Cards were back in town, they tacked another W onto their record as they hosted the Moose Jaw Millers. The score was 10-2.

The Cardinals scored 10 runs on 18 hits to take the win.

Yorkton pounded out six doubles. Hank Forrest, Dondrei Hubbard, Jake Davidson and Donovan Buechs all had three hits in the game. 

Bryson Spagnuolo, a freshman from Santa Clara University pitched seven solid innings for the Yorkton victory.  

The next home action for the Cardinals will be on Wednesday, June 28 at 7:05 p.m. as they host the highway 10 rivals, the Melville Millionaires. The two teams have been close in the standings all season.
