Cardinals just over halfway through season

It was a busy week for the Yorkton Cardinals in Western Major Baseball League action. The team played a total of five games at the time of print. They went 2-3 in those games, pushing their record to 7-17 for the season.

Jackson Soto hit a homerun last Thursday at Jubilee Park, when the Cardinals hosted the Highway 10 rivals, the Melville Millionaires. The Cards won 6-3.

It was a busy week for the Yorkton Cardinals in Western Major Baseball League action. The team played a total of five games at the time of print. They went 2-3 in those games, pushing their record to 7-17 for the season.Ìý

Last Wednesday it was a home game against the Melville Millionaires that gave the Cardinals another W. The score was 6-3. Justin Johnston pitched the complete game for Yorkton, and Jackson Soto went two for four with one homerun and two RBI.Ìý

On Thursday and Friday the Cards hit the road for two games against the Brooks Bombers. The teams split the two-game series. The first game went to Brooks, 7-6. The second game was a win for the Cardinals, 6-2.Ìý

On Saturday, the Cardinals spent Canada Day playing a doubleheader against the Lethbridge Bulls. The first game was a close one, ending 7-6 for the Bulls. The second ended 12-5.Ìý

The Yorkton Cardinals are now a just over half way through the season. They sit just 5.5 games back of Weyburn for the final playoff spot in the eastern division.Ìý

Donovan Buechs is leading the team in batting averages so far with .333. Hank Forrest is close behind at .321. Forrest leads the team in triples with two, just one away from tying an organization record, and doubles with six.

Chance Wheatley leads in hits with 27.

Parker Smejkal leads in RBIs with 16, and Dondrei Hubbard follows with 15. Smejkal also leads the team in homeruns with four. Hubbard leads in runs scored with 18.Ìý

In pitching, DJ DePiero leads in strikeouts with 31. He’s fifth in the league in this category.Ìý

The Cardinals will play at home again on Wednesday, July 5 at 7:05 p.m. against Swift Current. The game, as always, will be held at Jubilee Park.Ìý

They’ll play again at home on Friday, July 7 at 7:05 p.m. against Regina.Ìý
