The Yorkton Cardinals are on the backstretch of their season. Over the past week they’ve played four games, and went 1-4 in those matches.

Last Wednesday, they played Regina in Melville. It was a slow game for the Cardinals, which resulted in a 12-2 loss. Hank Forrest and Jake Davidson scored the two runs for Yorkton. Kyle Stevenson was pinned with the loss.

On Friday, it was another Regina-Yorkton match up, this time in Yorkton. While the Cardinals were able to get on the scoreboard first and the game was close up until the ninth inning, Regina added 7 runs to their score for the win. The game ended 12-4. Bryson Spagnuolo took the loss for the Cards, after six innings pitched. Forrest led the team with two RBI, two hits and one run.

Over the weekend, the Edmonton Prospects came to town for two games against the Cardinals. The teams ended up splitting those games 1-1.

On Saturday, the Prospects took the win 3-0. There was no score until the 7th inning, when Edmonton got their first. Their other two came in the 9th. Justin Johnston took the loss for the Cardinals. He lasted 8.1 innings and allowed three runs on six hits before leaving the game.

On Sunday things turned around for the Cards as they finished on top of the Prospects, 4-0.

Bryce Mulcahy picked up his second win of the year, throwing for six innings. He allowed three hits and two walks but struck out 12 hitters. Derek Marshall and Tyler McDonald mopped up for the Cardinals. In total the Yorkton pitchers fanned 15 Prospect batters. Kevin Connolly had three hits and an RBI for the Cardinals. Chance Wheatley had a double and his second home run of the year. He also added three RBI. Jake Davidson and Parker Smejkal each had one run.

The Cardinals hold a 10-26 record at time of print. There are less than two weeks left in the regular season, and the Cardinals are still hoping to slide into a playoff spot before the season finishes.

The Cardinals play at home at Jubilee Park on Wednesday, July 19 at 7:05 p.m., for what will be their second game against the Okotos Dawgs this week.
