Canora students excel in archery

Matthew Makowsky, a Grade 4 elementary student at Canora Junior Elementary School, picked up gold medal victory in his age group at the recent NASP (National Archery in the Schools Program) held in Edmonton.

Rod Steciuk, CJES principal, told a student assembly on March 20 that Makowsky won the competition with an impressive winning score of 265. Aiden Baron, Grade 8 student at Canora Composite School, also stood out in the same competition. He achieved a bronze medal finish in the national middle school category for grades 6 to 8.

On March 20, a total of 10 local students were recognized for their achievements in archery as part of their involvement in NASP, and for advancing to nationals in Edmonton. CCS students involved included siblings Jamie Katryniuk (Grade 7) and Kaulen Katryniuk (Grade 5), Daniel Howell and Cole Fountain (both Grade 6), Baron, and Ashley Stusek (Grade 9).

Thomas Lowes, CCS teacher and NASP coach, said he thoroughly enjoys shooting as well as teaching young people how to master the skill. Since this is a challenging activity to learn for most, he said it allows students to learn the discipline it takes to put in the time and focus needed to excel.

Four students from CJES were singled out for qualifying and being involved in the same competition. Along with Makowsky, Chase Hembling, Noah Prychak, and Chase Fountain all in Grade 4, received NASP crests as reminders of their achievements. In addition to his gold medal, Makowsky was also presented with a flashy gold bow.

Jennifer Prychak, CJES teacher and NASP coach, said she was thrilled with Makowsky’s victory, but feels the experience was also very beneficial for the other three boys, as well as all the CJES students involved in NASP.
