Canora Snow Shoe Festival a great opportunity for kids

Normally not every Canora child would have the opportunity to enjoy a day of snowshoeing and healthy eating, but from March 20 to 24 they were able to do just that, said Brandi Zavislak, Canora Community Development Officer.

Normally not every Canora child would have the opportunity to enjoy a day of snowshoeing and healthy eating, but from March 20 to 24 they were able to do just that, said Brandi Zavislak, Canora Community Development Officer.

Put on by the Canora Child Action Plan, or CAP, the annual Canora Snowshoe Festival was open to children from Canora Junior Elementary School all the way down to pre-Kindergarten.

鈥淚t鈥檚 important for all kids to be involved in positive stuff with no barriers, financial or otherwise,鈥 said Zavislak. 鈥淎nd trust me, by the end of a full day of snowshoeing, those kids were good and tired.鈥

Attendance averaged close to 55 kids on each of the five days. Zavislak said the younger ones seemed to have the most energy, and usually covered about 2.5 km (1.5 miles) in a day on their snowshoes. The parental support was encouraging, with different parent volunteers showing up every day, said Zavislak.

Of course, weather varied during the five-day event, but even on the coldest, windiest day the kids showed up full of energy and ready for adventure, said Zavislak.

She is confident that the Canora Child Action Plan Snowshoe Festival once again achieved its goal of promoting physical fitness among Canora children while teaching them the importance of eating healthy snacks.
