Canora and area athletes selected to compete at Saskatchewan Winter Games

听听听听听听听听听听听 The Parkland Valley team competing at the Saskatchewan Winter Games in North Battleford from February 18-24 will including three athletes from the Canora area.

听听听听听听听听听听听 Felicity Mydonick of Canora has been chosen for the female badminton team, while Carter Dereniwsky of Canora and Toby Olynyk of Buchanan are members of the male hockey team.

听听听听听听听听听听听 听Mydonick was chosen for the team from a series of tryouts in Melville before Christmas, said her mother Clarissa. She has been playing singles at Canora Composite School for the past five years.

听听听听听听听听听听听 The Parkland Valley badminton team consists of five girls and five boys, who are spending the three weeks leading up to the games in Melville with coach Troy Frick practising not only singles, but doubles and mixed doubles, said Mydonick.

听听听听听听听听听听听 The female events at the games will on February 21 to 24.

听听听听听听听听听听听 Dereniwsky and Olynyk were selected for the hockey team from tryouts held in Bredenbury in early December. The hockey team is made up of bantam age players born in 2004.

听听听听听听听听听听听 Dereniwsky is a forward who started his hockey career in the I.P. division in Canora at the age of three, said his mother Kristen. That鈥檚 younger than most players start, but his older brother Carson was already playing. Carter played three years of I.P. and two years of novice hockey in Canora.

听听听听听听听听听听听 Upon advancing from novice, he tried out for and made the Yorkton Atom AA team, and is now playing Bantam AA hockey.

听听听听听听听听听听听 Olynyk is a defenceman who played minor hockey in Canora from I.P. to first year Atom, said his father Will.

听听听听听听听听听听听 He then made the transition to Yorkton, and this year is playing Bantam A hockey there.

听听听听听听听听听听听 The coach of the Parkland Valley male hockey team is Kevin Kirkwood, who is a former president of Canora Minor Hockey.

听听听听听听听听听听听 The male hockey at the games will be held from February 18-21.
