Two Yorkton Blitz volleyball teams, the U-15 Blazing Blitz and U-15 Blitz Fusion, traveled to Saskatoon this past weekend for the 2013-14 Provincial tournament.
The Blazing Blitz faced some stiff competition in the round-robin portion of the tournament, dropping a tough match to Prince Albert Toppers Esprit in straight sets 25-20, 25-19 that ended up being the deciding round-robin game. While the Blazing Blitz were able to beat their next three round-robin opponents by scores of 25-20, 25-21 (Oxbow Black Knights), 23-25, 25-20, 15-12 (Lampman Purple Cobras) and 25-19, 25-20 (Lloydminster Rustlers Green) it was not enough as the team from Prince Albert ran the table to qualify for tier one while sending the Blazing Blitz to tier two.
The Blazing Blitz couple not duplicate their round-robin success in the tier two playoffs however, as the Yorkton squad fell 25-14, 25-6 to the Saskatoon Smash before losing in straight sets to Regina QCVC Black 25-18, 25-18.
The Blitz Fusion, meanwhile, finished the round-robin with a 2-2 record, losing to Regina QCVC Black 25-18, 21-25, 15-8 and Estevan Extreme 25-23, 25-23 before beating Regina QCVC Purple Panthers 25-16, 25-11 and the Saskatoon Impact 25-5, 25-12.
The 2-2 record sent the Blitz Fusion to the tier three playoffs where they powered their way through to the gold medal game before falling to another Fusion team in the form of the Battlefords VC Fusion 25-15, 14-25, 6-15 to take home tier three silver.
Both the Blazing Blitz and Blitz Fusion will now have a few weeks off of competiton play to focus on the 2014 Canadian Nationals which both teams will be attending.
The Yorkton Blitz U-16 team also traveled to Saskatoon for Provincials. The U-16 team finished with a 3-1 record after round-robin play to qualify for tier two playoffs where they finished in sixth place and 14th in the province.
