The Yorkton Blitz 17U Girls’ volleyball team took part in the Saskatchewan Volleyball Association’s Provincial Championships on the weekend of May 1-3 in Saskatoon.
The girls captured the bronze medal in Tier Two with a strong performance all throughout the weekend.
The Blitz opened the tournament going 1-1 in pool play, defeating the Warman Volleyball Club in straight sets 25-10, 25-22, before falling to the Swift Current Sundogs in two tight sets, 20-25, 21-25.
The 1-1 record meant that the Blitz had to compete in the Tier crossover portion of the tournament. In their first crossover game for Tier One qualification the Blitz edged the Loreburn Impact in straight sets with identical 25-22, 25-22, set wins.
The win meant the ladies had a chance to qualify for Tier One if they beat the Regina Western Volleyball Academy Red.
Unfortunately that was not to be as Regina Western defeated Yorkton 19-25, 17-25.
The defeat dropped the girls to Tier Two where they knocked off Rose Valley in their first game in three sets, losing the first set 19-25 before bouncing back with 25-15 and 15-6 set victories to advance to the Tier Two semi-finals.
The Blitz met RVVC in the semi’s where they lost 16-25, 26-28, dropping them to the bronze medal game where they were able to come away with a medal, ousting the Lloydminster Tin Hats 25-20, 25-22 to win the bronze medal game.
Overall there were 25 teams that took part in the tournament with teams competing in four tiers.
The girls took part in Nationals in Calgary over the May long weekend, however results were not available at press time.
