Yorkton R. Miller's Midget Cardinals first-year pitcher/catcher Tyson Black became the second Cardinals player to win the Saskatchewan Premier Baseball League 'AA' Boston Pizza Player of the Week after teammate Mason Kelley won the award last week.
Black was named the recipient for this award in Week Four due to a spectacular performance on the mound against the Weyburn Beavers on June First in which he tossed a complete game surrendering just two runs (one earned) on three hits and a walk while striking out 14 in a 4-2 Yorkton win. But what did the first-year pitcher from Miramichi, New Brunswick, think of his own performance? "I thought it was pretty good," offered the fireballer. "Probably one of my best performances this year.
"Hopefully I'll have a couple more like that but it was a pretty good game."
In addition to his sparkling effort on the mound, Black also went 6-for-10 at the plate with a walk, two RBI's and four runs scored while swiping two bases and sacrificing himself twice for the betterment of the team. That effort solidified the Player of the Week award for what many consider to be the ace of the Yorkton staff.
