The Yorkton bantam 'AA' UCT Terriers knocked the wind out of the Regina Pat Blues in their third game of the season on Oct. 2.
The Terriers' high-powered offense led to them coming away with a decisive 7-1 victory on the road.
"I thought we played very well," said Terriers head coach Graham Garrett. "The team is starting to come together and the offense has been doing really well."
Luke Schappert and Mckenzie Welke scored in the first, followed by Keenan Taphorn and Welke notching his second in the middle frame to give the Terriers a commanding 4-0 lead.
Yorkton kept pouring on the goals in the final period as Cody Dubas, Tyler Stratechuk and Derrick Budz potted one apiece.
The Pat Blues finally got on the score board with only 1:24 left on the clock as Alex Kannock scored his first on the year.
The Terriers' power play was on fire in the contest. They scored three goals on seven man-advantage tries.
"I'm really happy with how the power play went," said Garrett. "Scoring goals on the power play is the difference between a win and a loss in some games, so it's good to see it working early in the year."
Two pairs of twins stood out for the Terriers in the game: the Taphorn twins, Keenan and Kaeden, who scored two points apiece, and the Welke twins, McKenzie and Carson, who scored four points apiece.
"The Taphorns are just first year players and they have really shown some good skill this year," said Garrett. "They are very offensively gifted players."
"The Welkes look like they are really coming into their own this year. They played in this league last year, so they know what to expect. I think they'll be leaders for us and a big part of our offense."
The Terriers lost to the Regina Foxes 4-2 on Oct. 7 on the road. The stats weren't available for press time.
Yorkton's 'AA' bantam team looks promising thus far this year, but with the Saskatoon 'AA' teams joining the league this season, their head coach knows it will take a lot of work to stay in the top half of the standings in the 22-team league.
"I think this league is tougher with the Saskatoon teams because it's more demanding for travel," he said. "With tournaments and everything else taking place, it really will demand a lot out of these young players. Endurance means a lot in this league."
The 2-2-0 Terriers play their first home games this upcoming weekend. They host the Prince Albert Venice House Raiders on Oct. 12 at Farrell Agencies Arena at 4:45 p.m. Followed by squaring off against the Battlefords Barons at 2 p.m. on Oct. 13.
