The Yorkton Blitz 17U girls’ volleyball team took part in the third Sask Cup of the year in Saskatoon this weekend.

The team began the tournament in Division Two which consisted of 24 teams. In the first match the Blitz team faced the Strasbourg Synergy 18U team. In a close match the Yorkton team won two in a row winning 25-23 and 28-26.

In the second match of the day the Blitz faced a 17U team called Sask Attack. Unfortunately the Yorkton team came out flat losing 19-25 and 16-25.

In the crossover match was an 18U team from Pierceland which the Yorkton team dispatched easily winning 25-16 and 25-12.

The Blitz had extra motivation because the winner faced the Sask Attack and the girls wanted a chance to redeem themselves. The Blitz team played a great match with a more balanced attack and a strong defence winning 25-17 and 25-23 to avenge their earlier loss to the Attack.

In the quarterfinals the Blitz faced the 18U team Muenster Storm.

In a close match the younger 17U Blitz team took the first set 25-21, but lost the second set 22-25.

The third set saw the Yorkton team rally back to win 15-10 to advance into the semifinals where they met the 18U Moose Jaw Element.

In a great match with many long rallies the older team from Moose Jaw won two straight 19-25 and 18-25 sending the Yorkton Blitz to the Bronze Tier One match.

In the final match of the weekend the Yorkton team faced the Lloydminster 17U team.

The Yorkton Blitz played a very strong defensive match and out battled the Lloyd team winning 25-20 and 25-15 to claim the bronze.

The third place finish out of 24 teams is the best showing for the Yorkton team this season. The team will next compete at the Cougar tournament in Regina April 18-19.
