Children between the ages of five and 12 are being kept stimulated this month at the Cote Summer Literacy Camp.

On one afternoon last week in the gymnasium of Chief Gabriel Cote Education Complex, about 20 children were involved in making three dimensional teepee scenes using construction paper, glue, paints and leaves and branches. Lana Kulak of Kamsack was the instructor, and Gloria Pelly, the lead co-ordinator.

Organized by Frontier College, the Cote Summer Literacy Camp was funded by the Government of Saskatchewan, Ministry of Justice and Cote First Nation. The lead national sponsor was the TD Bank Group and the community sponsor, which provides some resources and programming, was the Parkland Regional Library’s Family Literacy Hub, with Carol Marriott of Kamsack as the literacy co-ordinator.

Held from July 11 to 29, the Camp’s activities include: journaling, music and drama, cultural activities, reading and storytelling.

Some community members, including James Perry of the Kamsack Petro-Canada outlet, will be reading to the youngsters on July 27, and then will provide a tour of the Petro-Canada service station as well as providing a treat for the children.

The camp is providing books at no cost and is involving the children in arts and crafts, science experiments, numeracy, outdoor and indoor games and field trips, Marriott said. The group will also visit Madge Lake for a picnic and for outdoor conservation activities that will help them learn more about nature.

The camp was free with no cost for participants, she said. It includes a hot breakfast, lunch and snacks, as well as all the materials required.
