SASKATOON — A Saskatchewan rubber recycler and manufacturing company has received a large fine following a workplace accident in Martensville in 2020, after appearing in court last week.
Shercom Industries Inc. plead guilty to one violation of occupational health and safety legislation in Saskatoon Provincial Court on Feb. 16, in relation to an accident involving a worker on July 7, 2020.
A worker in the company’s Martensville plant was seriously injured after their glove caught and became trapped in the belt of a pulley system.
The company was subsequently charged for failing to provide an effective safeguard where a worker is using a dangerous moving part of a machine, under The Occupational Health and Safety Regulations Act.
Shercom Industries is now facing a fine of $85,714, in addition to a surcharge of $30,000, for a total of $120,000.
The company previously received an occupational safety fine totalling $420,000 in 2018, following the death of an 18-year-old employee that occurred at it's Corman Park site three years prior.
