SASKATOON — SARCAN celebrated its 35th year of operation by opening a bigger recycling depot in Saskatoon. The new facility is located at the Marquis Industrial Park on 3803 Kochar Avenue.

The new recycling depot covers an area of 13,500 square feet, which is twice the size of the Faithful Avenue facility that was permanently shut down.

According to Saskatchewan Associations of Rehabilitation Centres/SARCAN Recycling Communications and Culture Manager Sean Homenick, the new depot is the third busiest SARCAN depot in Saskatchewan and the second busiest in Saskatoon.

“The new depot is 13,500 square feet, double the size of the previous north-end depot. This recycling depot is the third busiest SARCAN depot in Saskatchewan and the second busiest in Saskatoon,” said Homenick.

“The 36 SARCAN recyclers working at this [the Faithful Avenue] depot collected 31,725,100 beverage containers from 98,399 customers last year. With this relocation to a larger space, we expect those volumes of containers to grow this year.”

SARCAN Recycling Executive Director Amy McNeil said the facility is a modern, efficient, and more convenient workplace for their team and customers. She added that SARCAN is excited to begin its 35th year of recycling excellence.

"Since 1988, SARCAN Recycling has been a leader in creating employment opportunities for people experiencing disability, resource conservation and community development across Saskatchewan," said McNeil.

"We are excited to begin our 35th year of recycling excellence by opening this new, modern, efficient depot. This [facility] is a more modern and safer workplace for our team and a brighter, quicker and more efficient recycling depot that meets the needs of our loyal customers."

Environment Minister Dana Skoropad, the Arm River MLA, congratulated SARCAN’s efforts in making it easier and more convenient for their customers, who have become partners in waste management and reduction.

"Effective waste management is essential to responsible growth and they continue to be an important partner in our province's work in waste reduction… We appreciate having the opportunity to celebrate these milestones with our partners,” said Skoropad.

He added the new depot uses a fraction of the energy thanks to its innovative design, although it is twice the size of the facility it has replaced. There are also more parking and other conveyor belts for faster service.

Saskatchewan's Growth Plan aims to have 1.4 million people in the province by 2030. Managingn solid waste is essential to avoid overwhelming landfills and polluting the environment.

SARCAN's impressive recycling numbers support the Solid Waste Management Strategy, contributing to Saskatchewan's Growth Plan to build a stronger Saskatchewan.

SARCAN's new recycling depot operates from Mondays to Saturdays from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The Drop & Go service is available until 9:00 p.m. on Thursdays and Fridays. SARCAN also operates three other recycling depots in Saskatoon located in Sutherland, Jasper Avenue Â鶹´«Ã½AV and 22nd Street West.
