On April 30, two members of the Outlook RCMP Detachment were recognized for their lifesaving efforts last June.
The Lieutenant-Governor of Saskatchewan, Vaughn Solomon Schofield presented the Royal Lifesaving Society’s Rescue Commendation awards at Government House, with Cst. Elliot Chuback and Cst. Kyle Lakinger each receiving the award for acting with courage to help someone in distress.
On June 3rd, Cst. Chubak responded to a complaint in Outlook to help a person in urgent need of medical care. With the help of the Outlook Fire Department, Cst. Chubak did a search of the area near the river trying to locate the person. The person was found nearby in the water at the river in Outlook. The person was face-down in the water, and Cst. Chubak tied a rope around himself and swam out, pulling the person to shore to be treated by emergency services.
On July 17th, Cst. Chubak and Cst. Lakinger were doing a patrol in the RM of Maplebush and the south portion of Douglas Park. The Constables saw two males who had capsized in a canoe 150 metres from shore with no life jackets with them. The males were exhausted but once they saw help, they tried to swim to shore. The males were struggling to stay above water as they abandoned the canoe. Cst. Chubak and Cst. Lakinger swam out to the men, each grabbing one and dragging them back to shore. The men were cared for by the Constables until Central Butte EMS could arrive.
The commendation is well deserved as both of these men are local heroes who willingly risked their own lives to help members of their community. Through these selfless acts of courage, three lives were saved.
