SASKATOON — A house fire in the 1700-block Avenue G North claimed the life of one of its residents, the Saskatoon Police Service confirmed Wednesday.
The patient was taken to St. Paul’s hospital with one SFD paramedic accompanying ambulance personnel. The 64-year-old male later succumbed to his injuries.
The Saskatoon Fire Department responded to a house fire at 1:42 a.m. were three fire engines, a ladder truck, one rescue unit and the Chief Officer dispatched to the scene.
Arriving fire crews learned that two residents were at home at the time of the fire and entered the home where they located the fire in a basement bedroom.
One male resident in the basement bedroom was found unresponsive and fire crews removed him from the house while performing CPR until the ambulance arrived.
The home’s other resident sustained minor injuries and remained at the scene as fire crews contained the fire in the bedroom and extinguished it quickly.
The SFD fire investigator was dispatched to the fire scene and was assisted by an SPS arson investigator attend.
It was determined that the cause of the fire was accidental due to the victim actively smoking in bed while on assisted oxygen. Fire damage is estimated at $25,000 dollars.
