Structure fire in Saskatoon deemed suspicious by fire investigator

Crews shut down utilities to keep the scene safe.

SASKATOON — The Saskatoon Fire Department responded to an early morning structure fire on Friday in the 400 block of Avenue R Â鶹´«Ã½AV that has been deemed suspicious by the fire inspector.

The fire that started at around 5:44 a.m. was determined suspicious by the fire investigator on the scene after conducting a cause and origin examination.

The fire investigator identified two points of origin of the structure fire where a total of $120,000 was estimated as damages.

SFD dispatched three fire engines, a ladder truck, one rescue unit and the battalion chief to the scene with the first arriving crew seeing heavy smoke showing from the structure.

A safety officer was appointed at the fire scene as arriving fire crews were assigned tactical duties. An exterior attack was initiated by connecting to a hydrant.

Utilities were shut down and utility companies were asked to attend to assist in the scene for safety.

Fire crews then began an interior attack and the blaze was brought under control at 7:15 a.m. The incident commander transferred the scene to the fire investigator at 7:30 a.m.

More information will be released as soon as the SFD and the Saskatoon Police Service finish their investigation.
