Work is underway to repair flood damage to Yorkton Regional High School in time for the new school year."We're very optimistic that we're going to be ready for the fall," Superintendent of Schools Withman Jaigobin told Yorkton This Week.
The school's crawlspace and mechanical room filled with water during the July 1 flood, resulting in widespread contamination and destruction of air handling equipment.
A restoration company is scheduled to have the school's ducts cleaned and the contaminated crawlspace sealed off by August 15, said Jaigobin.
"Shortly after that, we will do air quality testing to make sure that once we turn the air handling units on, we're pulling air from outside and not from that contaminated space."
As long as this process goes well, the school should be on schedule to open as planned in the fall.Eight replacement boilers also need to be installed, but that work is less urgent."We won't have heat right at the beginning of the school year. However, we will have heat in time for the heating season by October."
Good Spirit School Division has contingency plans in mind if the cleanup is delayed. A minor delay would mean pushing back the first day of school by about a week. For anything beyond that, the division will move students to alternate locations around Yorkton.
