The City of Yorkton has been forced to look for an alternate provider of dispatching services for the City's fire department.

"Since 2002 Yorkton Fire Protective Services has been utilizing the services of Med-Com Comprehensive Dispatching Services. In April of this year we were informed that as of August 1, 2010 Med-Com will be closing their doors. Since this time administration has been exploring options and have found three companies in the province that offer a dispatching service that will meet the needs of the fire department," explained John Whittaker Deputy Chief - Training & Operations, at the regular meeting of Yorkton Council Monday.

Whittaker said of the three companies offering services, only two were taking on new clients. The PPSCC service out of Prince Albert, operated by the Saskatchewan Office of the Fire Commissioner offered the lowest cost of the two, with a career department charge of $2.30 per capita based on a population of 15,064 (stats can) or $34,647 per annum ($2,887 per month). The cost is higher than the fee charged by Med-Com which had been $1.60 per capita based on a population of 17,186 (health region stats). This works out to be $27,498 per annum ($2,291 per month).

Council unanimously passed a motion to go with the PPSCC service.
