Health Minister Don McMorris has announced the intent to expand coverage of dental services to include dental implants in some circumstances.
Dental implants will be covered in exceptional situations including tumours (benign and malignant) and congenital defects (cleft palate and metabolic disorders). Coverage takes effect July 1 and will not be retroactive.
"I extend my sympathy to those who find themselves in difficult circumstances where dental implants are recommended and other methods are unable to provide satisfactory results," McMorris said. "Expanding coverage to include dental implants will lead to a more patient-centred approach and will improve the patient experience for those facing this tough situation."
Coverage will be limited to the initial cost to provide dental implants and does not extend to ongoing maintenance costs. Dental implants for cosmetic purposes will not be covered. Prior approval will be required, meaning coverage must be reviewed and approved by the Saskatchewan Ministry of Health.
The cost for this additional coverage is approximately $360,000 a year - making Saskatchewan's coverage one of the most generous in Canada.
