Yorkton City Councillors voted unanimously to implement a program which will enable them to purchase laptop computers, partly at the expense of taxpayers.
In a report by Lonnie Kaal, Director of Finance with the City circulated to Council at its regular meeting Monday she noted, "We are aware that other municipalities provide their members of council with laptop computers to use for Council business."
Kaal said it was felt the City of Yorkton implement a policy which would allow Councillors to purchase a laptop. However, rather than the City buying the computers, it was felt it would make greater sense to allow Councillors the freedom to buy what they wanted.
"Given the technology changes rapidly and individuals prefer different options, the proposal is for each member of Council to have the option of purchasing a personal laptop with the options and software that they prefer," outlined the report.
"The City will then reimburse a portion of this cost (suggest $700). Since members of Council will be elected for a four-year term, this cost is less than $180/year per councillor. The laptop will belong to the councillor and will not be the responsibility of the City."
