2021 War Amps campaign underway

The War Amps has kicked off its 2021 key tag mailing to Yorkton residents.
The War Amps has kicked off its 2021 key tag mailing to Yorkton residents.
This year鈥檚 theme is听 鈥淵ou Are a Part of What We Do,鈥 marking the 75th anniversary of the Association鈥檚 Key Tag Service and paying tribute to the public for helping make it a success.
In the letter accompanying the tags, parents Tracie and Jeremy describe how The War Amps has supported their family, from the day their daughter, Michaela Blakslee, was born missing part of her left arm, as well as some fingers and toes.
Michaela, who is a member of The War Amps Child Amputee (CHAMP) Program,听 receives financial assistance for artificial limbs and devices and also attends regional seminars where Champs and their parents learn about the latest in artificial limbs, dealing with teasing and staring, and parenting an amputee child.
Michaela鈥檚 artificial arms, which she calls her 鈥渉elper hands鈥, include one for everyday use and another that she uses for activities like bike riding.
鈥淲ithout the funding from The War Amps, it would be very difficult for us to get her any prosthetics at all,鈥 says Tracie and Jeremy. 鈥淲hatever isn鈥檛 covered through our workplace insurance and the government, The War Amps steps in so she has these devices to help her through daily life.鈥
The Key Tag Service was launched back in 1946 so that returning war amputee veterans could not only work for competitive wages, but also provide a service to Canadians that would generate funds for the Association鈥檚 many programs. The Key Tag Service continues to employ amputees and people with disabilities and has returned more than 1.5 million sets of lost keys to their owners.
Each key tag does have a confidentially coded number so if you lose your keys, the finder can call the toll-free number on the back of the tag or place them in any mailbox in Canada, and The War Amps will return them to you by courier, free of charge.
