Young students at Dinsmore Composite School had their parents and fellow students tapping their toes and getting into the beat on Wednesday afternoon, April 12 as they put on a makeshift concert showcasing instruments made entirely from scratch.
The show by the Grade 2 & 3 students, entitled 'Rock Your Socks Off!', was held in the DCS gymnasium and a silver collection was taken at the door, raising money for a class field trip.
The production was a public demonstration of what the kids have been learning in their Music unit as part of Art class, highlighting the history of music and various instruments, as well as what elements they bring to any particular style of music; rhythm, tempo, speed, resonance, texture, etc.
The kids created their own music sources that served as hand-crafted versions of instruments such as guitars and drums, utilizing household objects and materials such as tin cans, rubber bands, beads, tape, paper towel rolls, pie plates, and macaroni.
"I'm very proud of these kids; they've really been rocking it!" said their teacher, Ms. Sydney Willner.
Prior to each group performance, the students explained what instruments they were playing and what musical elements they represented, allowing guests to get a feel for what kind of sounds they were about to hear. With that, the enthusiastic youngsters, some of whom adopted rock star names such as one young lady going by 'Spotlight Girl', proceeded to play such songs as "Story of My Life", "Let It Go", and "Happy".
Afterward, guests were encouraged to speak with the young performers, but it was stressed that they could only sign so many autographs before it was time to get back to the classroom.
