INVERMAY - Student athletes from Invermay School competed at a high level during track-and-field districts in Yorkton on May 28 and 29, with numerous top-10 and several gold medal winners, according to Kent Seerey, coach.
“We had many students achieve their personal bests,” said Seerey. “Out of 28 athletes who attended the pre-district meet, we had 25 Grade 6-12 athletes advance to districts. From the possible 14 athletes eligible to advance to provincials, we had six athletes advance.”
Senior girls
Rachel Enge won a gold medal in javelin, finished seventh in triple jump and shot put, and ninth in discus.
Bailey Maier won the silver medal in high jump, placed fourth in javelin and fifth in long jump.
Clouie Cabungcal participated in the 80m hurdle, long jump and triple jump.
Intermediate girls
Cassidy Bosovich finished second in javelin, fourth in discus and fifth in shot put.
Taelynn Maier placed fourth in shot put and seventh in 80m hurdles.
Madeline Graham came in fifth in discus and javelin, and 10th in shot put.
Junior girls
Marissa Fidek was the bronze medalist in javelin and finished sixth in shot put.
Tyla Dubs finished third in discus, fourth in shot put and sixth in javelin.
April Grychowski placed fourth in javelin and triple jump, and sixth in long jump.
Bantam girls
Addison Enge finished fourth in triple jump, ninth in 800m and 10th in 400m.
Peewee girls
Caidence Keller won a bronze medal in discus and was sixth in shot put. Paisley Bosovich participated in the 200m.
Intermediate boys
Angelo Ferenal won a bronze medal in 100m hurdles, placed fifth in high jump, and seventh in long jump and javelin.
Senior boys
Aron Cudal won the gold medal in the javelin, silver medal in the 100m and the long jump, and bronze in the triple jump.
Lance Corpuz won bronze in the shot put and the javelin, and placed seventh in the long jump.
Change Enge participated in the discus event.
Bantam boys
Michael Mesias won the gold medal in the 200m and javelin, and silver in the 100m.
Kyle Pena finished fifth in javelin, seventh in discus and eighth in shop put.
Kashton MacLean placed seventh in triple jump and also participated in shot put.
Peewee boys
Morgan Graham finished 10th in triple jump.
Carson Wood tied for ninth place with Weston Glas in shot put. Glas also participated in long jump.
Aggregate
Invermay had two athletes achieve top-three finishes in the boys aggregate competition. Aron Cudal placed second, only one point out of first place, in the senior boys category thanks to his scores in javelin, 100m, long jump and triple jump.
Michael Mesias finished tied for second in bantam boys aggregate, which included his success in 200m, long jump, javelin and 100m.
Season highlights
Coach Seerey said track-and-field makes up a big part of the Invermay School student experience.
“We are very fortunate that 75 per cent of our student population take pride in being on the Eagles Track team. We have a very dedicated group who come out to practice rain or shine.
Our athletes finished in the top five at districts in 25 events.”
There were many individual highlights at districts, including gold for Rachel Enge in the senior girls javelin.
“Rachel threw a 30.57 metre javelin, which is four metres further than her personal best to capture her gold medal,” said Seerey.
Michael Mesias had a big meet, bringing home three bantam boys medals: gold in 200m and javelin, and silver in 100m.
“Michael was only 20cm short of breaking the javelin record for bantam boys of 39.43metres.”
“Aron Cudal threw a monstrous 47.33 metres in senior boys javelin to win his gold medal…the silver medalist was eight metres shorter.”
Cassidy Bosovich was one of the youngest athletes to qualify for provincials.
“Cassidy is actually bantam aged but was moved up to the intermediate category to give her an opportunity to go to provincials,” said Seerey. “She surpassed her expectations in javelin with a personal best throw of 26.03 metres for a silver medal.”
The six Invermay athletes who qualified for provincials in Saskatoon on June 7-8 are:
Angelo Ferenal (intermediate boys hurdles), Cassidy Bosovich (intermediate girls javelin), Bailey Maier (senior girls high jump), Lance Corpuz (senior boys shot put), Rachel Enge (senior girls javelin) and Aron Cudal (senior boys javelin,long jump, 100m and 4 by 100m relay).
