RCMP REPORT: Youth breaks in, threatens residents, starts fire

Police were dispatched to a fire call in Canora and learned a male youth broke into a residence in Canora and threatened to kill the occupant inside. The youth started the living room area on fire and then fled the residence.

The Canora/Sturgis RCMP responded to 109 calls from July 13 to Aug. 2, including a break and enter complaint in Preeceville after a male was found inside a grain elevator.

CANORA - The Canora/Sturgis RCMP responded to 109 calls from July 13 to Aug. 2, some of which included: four 911 Act calls, one arson, five break-and-enters, one breach of peace, two Child Welfare Act calls, one criminal harassment, one Coroners Act call, four disturbing the peace, two failures to comply with conditions, one false alarm, one Fire Prevention Act call, three frauds, one Liquor Act call, one Mental Health Act call, 15 mischiefs, seven other provincial calls, five suspicious persons, seven thefts, three traffic collisions, 30 traffic offenses, one uttering threats, five wellbeing checks, and one prisoner.

Grain elevator break-in

On July 14, the Canora/Sturgis RCMP were dispatched to a break and enter complaint in Preeceville after a male was found inside a grain elevator. Police located the male and arrested him for break-and-enter.

Rock throwers break windows

The Canora/Sturgis RCMP investigated a mischief complaint on July 17 in Canora. Numerous windows on the Ready Roll Truck Tarps were broken from rocks. Police continue to investigate.

Vehicle & garden damage

The Canora/Sturgis RCMP received a report that a vehicle was keyed and a garden was damaged outside at a residence in Sturgis on July 20. Police continue to investigate.

Residential arson

On July 23, the Canora RCMP were dispatched to a fire call in Canora. Police attended the call and learned a male youth broke into a residence in Canora and threatened to kill the occupant inside. The youth started the living room area on fire and then fled the residence. The fire caused a significant amount of damage to the interior of the home. The youth was arrested by police and charged with arson disregard for human life, uttering threats against a person, mischief over $5,000, breaking and entering with intent, and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose. The youth was remanded into custody and released on an undertaking of a responsible person with strict conditions. There were no injuries as a result of the fire.

Camper fire

The Canora/Sturgis were dispatched to a camper fire at Burgis Beach on July 24 and assisted the Canora Fire Department. There were no injuries.

Bad joke

The Canora/Sturgis RCMP investigated a report of a break-and enter in Preeceville July 31. A note was left on the callers table stating “you know what I am looking for and I’ll be back for it”. Police later learned the note was part of a practical joke and no break-and-enter actually occurred.

Store break-in

On Aug. 1, a break and enter was reported to the Canora/Sturgis RCMP. Locks on storage containers behind the Home Hardware in Preeceville were cut. Police continue to investigate.

Found rifle seized

The Canora/Sturgis RCMP were dispatched on Aug. 1 to a found firearms call on Evelee Avenue in Canora. Police attended the scene and seized a rifle that had the stock and barrel cut off. Police continue to investigate.

Argument escalates

The Canora/Sturgis RCMP were dispatched to a disturbance call on Norway Road in Canora on Aug. 1. Police attended and located male who admitted to having a heated argument with his girlfriend.
