CANORA — The Canora/Sturgis RCMP responded to 27 calls from Feb. 8 to Feb. 14, some of which included:
- one assault with a weapon,
- three 911 calls,
- two Child Welfare Act calls,
- one criminal harassment,
- one disturbing the peace,
- one failure to comply with conditions,
- one false alarm, two frauds,
- one Litter Act call,
- two Mental Health Act calls,
- one mischief,
- one suspicious person call,
- two thefts,
- two traffic offenses,
- five traffic collisions and
- one prisoner.
Poor driving conditions
On Feb. 13, the Canora/Sturgis RCMP investigated three collisions that occurred on Highway 9 between Gorlitz and Canora. Decreased visibility and icy roads led to incidents that included: a semi vs vehicle, a single vehicle rollover, and vehicle vs vehicle. Only minor injuries were reported from the collisions.
Glut of prank 911 calls
The Canora/Sturgis RCMP were dispatched on Feb. 10 to a report of ten 911 calls from an unregistered cell phone in the Canora area. Giggling was heard during the phone calls. Police tracked down the address where the phone calls were made from and spoke to three young girls about making prank calls to 911. It is an offence under the Emergency 911 System Act to place a false, frivolous, or vexatious call to 911.
911 hang-up leads to arrest
The Canora/Sturgis RCMP were dispatched to a 911 hang-up call at a residence in Canora on Feb. 10. Police went to the home and learned an intoxicated man had assaulted his father and caused damaged to the inside of the residence. The man was charged with assault with a weapon, resisting arrest, and mischief under $5,000. The man was remanded into custody.
Assist after eviction
On Feb. 11, a woman called 911 asking for police assistance to gather personal items from a home after being evicted. Police liaised with the landlord, and provided direction and advice to the caller.
Phantom break-in
The Canora/Sturgis RCMP received a call on Feb. 12 from a woman who reported her home may have been broken into as her dogs had gotten out of her locked house and were running around. Police investigated and determined there was no evidence of a break and enter to the home.
