Canora RCMP: After previous collision, deer strikes RCMP vehicle

Canora RCMP were dispatched to a motor vehicle collision involving a deer on Highway 5 by Buchanan. As the police officer was responding to the collision, a deer ran out from the ditch and struck the driver's side of the police vehicle

Canora RCMP also dealt with a bail violation, a struck pedestrian and vandalism.

CANORA — The Canora/Sturgis RCMP responded to 48 calls from May 16 to May 23, some of which included:

  • two breach of peace calls,
  • one Coroners Act call,
  • one criminal harassment,
  • one dangerous driving,
  • one disturbing the peace,
  • three failures to comply with conditions,
  • two false alarms,
  • one Fire Prevention Act call,
  • two frauds,
  • four mischiefs,
  • five other provincial calls,
  • three roadside suspensions,
  • one sextortion,
  • one suspicious person,
  • 12 traffic offenses,
  • four traffic collisions,
  • one Trespass Act call,
  • one uttering threats,
  • two prisoners, and two
  • 911 Act calls.

Costly bail violation

On May 17, the Canora/Sturgis RCMP initiated an investigation into the whereabouts of a man who was on strict bail conditions. The man was not located at his residence or a location where he was allegedly working. The man was charged with failing to comply with his release conditions and remanded into custody.

Pedestrian hit in middle of road

The Canora/Sturgis RCMP were dispatched on May 17 to a motor vehicle collision involving a pedestrian on Highway 9 near Preeceville. The investigation revealed a woman had been walking in the middle of the road when an oncoming vehicle swerved to miss them, however the vehicle’s mirror struck the woman. She was taken to hospital by EMS with serious injuries. Police continue to investigate.

Failed alcohol test at traffic stop

Police officers from the Canora/Sturgis RCMP participated in National Impaired Driving Enforcement Day on May 18 by carrying out traffic safety enforcement initiatives. Of the motorists checked, one driver failed the mandatory alcohol screening breath demand. The driver’s vehicle was seized for 72 hours and their drivers’ licence was suspended for 60 days.

Angry deer?

The Canora/Sturgis RCMP were dispatched to a motor vehicle collision involving a deer on Highway 5 by Buchanan on May 20. As the police officer was responding to the collision, a deer ran out from the ditch and struck the driver's side of the police vehicle causing damage to the door and front fender. The police officer was not injured and the police vehicle is still drivable.

Open alcohol in vehicle

On May 21, the Canora/Sturgis RCMP stopped a vehicle on Highway 5 by Mikado for speeding. An open alcohol beverage container was observed in the console. The driver was issued a ticket under the Alcohol and Gaming Regulation Act for have, give, keep or consume beverage alcohol in a vehicle. The fine for the offence is $360.

Park vandalism

The Canora/Sturgis RCMP investigated vandalism at a park in the Canora Beach area on May 21. A basketball hoop and picnic table were damaged. Police continue to investigate.

Target practice?

On May 22, the Canora/Sturgis RCMP investigated damage to a vinyl fence in Canora. The damage to the fence was consistent with being hit by BB gun pellets. Police continue to investigate.
