Canora athletes in fine form at track-and-field districts

Canora Composite School student athletes excelled at districts in Yorkton with multiple gold medals and numerous top-ten finishes.

CANORA - Canora Composite School student athletes excelled at district competition in Yorkton on May 28 and 29 with multiple gold medals and numerous top-ten finishes.

“Our athletes hit personal bests, and overall represented CCS in a very positive manner,” reported coaches Thomas Lowes and Leona Kitchen.

Intermediate girls

Kaelyn Shukin won a gold medal in the 3,000m, finished fourth in the 100m, and also participated in the 200m.

Danielle Dutchak captured the silver medal in the 80m hurdles, placed fourth in triple jump, fifth in 100m, and eighth in long jump.

Paisley Wolkowski finished sixth in discus, ninth in shot put and also participated in long jump.

Heidi Mentanko placed ninth in triple jump and also participated in long jump.

Peewee girls

Angel Sliva won a gold medal in the 1,500m, finished fourth in 800m and eighth in triple jump. 

Madison Dutchak won a silver medal in the 400m and placed fourth in the 200m.

Courtlyn Heshka took the bronze medal in the 100m and fourth in the long jump.

Kenzee Kopelchuk captured bronze in the high jump.

Tobbi Effa finished fifth in the triple jump, sixth in the 100m and ninth in the long jump.

Tessa Prychak placed seventh in the shot put and eighth in discus.

Claire Ruf participated in the high jump

Junior girls

Cairwyn Bailey finished seventh in shot put and discus, and eighth in long jump.

Senior girls

Sofia Tratch earned fourth place in high jump, seventh in 80m hurdles, and eighth in triple jump.

Bantam girls

Maddy Dutchak won silver medals in triple jump and long jump, and placed eighth in shot put.

Isabelle Chabun won a silver medal in discus and placed seventh in long jump, and eighth in the 100m.

Intermediate boys

Liam Trask placed fourth in javelin, Josh Prychak finished ninth in triple jump and

Jackson Palagian was ninth in shot put. All three participated in the long jump.

Junior boys

Briel Beblow captured gold medals in the shot put and javelin.

Jordan Makowsky won silver medals in discus and javelin, and was seventh in shot put.

Rhett Ludba took the bronze medal in the 100m.

Andrew Sliva won the bronze medal in the 1,500m, placed fifth in the 400m and also participated in the 100m.

Senior boys

Taye Shukin won the gold in the Quadathalon after finishing first in: 100m, 800m, long jump and shot put.

Matthew Makowsky won the gold medal in the high jump, placed fourth in the 100m, sixth in javelin and participated in the long jump.

Bronson Heshka earned the silver medal in the 200m and was fourth in the 100m hurdles.

Porter Wolkowski won the silver medal in discus and took fourth in javelin.

Hunter Lamb earned the bronze medal in 100m hurdles, finished ninth in the long jump and participated in the 100m dash.

Noah Prychak finished fourth in the discus and sixth in the shot put.

Bantam boys

William Sliva won the gold medal in the 80m hurdles, placed fourth in the 3,000m and fifth in the 1500m.

Parker Kraynick finished fifth in the high jump, 10th in the discus and participated in the long jump.

Peewee boys

Kasen Heshka won a silver medal in the 100m, placed fourth in the 200m, 400m and 800m.

Karter Shukin finished fifth in the 1,500m, seventh in the 800m, ninth in the triple jump and participated in the 100m.

Hudson Matychuk came in eighth in the discus and participated in the high jump.

Seth Propp finished in 10th place in the discus.

Reid Kitchen participated in the long jump.

‘Proud of our athletes’

Coaches Lowes and Kitchen reported that the weather was sunny for both days of provincials, “but the wind was a challenge on Wednesday (Day 2).

“It was a very rushed season due to teacher sanctions and some rainy days, so we are very proud of how our athletes performed.  They are already excited and talking about next year. 

“And a huge congratulations to Taye Shukin, who broke three quadathalon records, as well as the record for the most points in the senior boys category.”

CCS athletes moving on to provincials June 7-8 in Saskatoon are: Danielle Dutchak (intermediate girls hurdles), Kaelyn Shukin (intermediate girls 3,000m), Jordan Makowsky (junior boys discus and javelin), Briel Beblow (junior boys javelin and shot put), Matthew Makowsky (senior boys high jump), Porter Wolkowski (senior boys discus) and Taye Shukin (senior boys quadathalon).
