Hearing loss is a natural part of life. Unfortunately, many of us find it hard to admit our hearing is declining.

Loving your ears by protecting yourself from loud noises, scheduling regular hearing tests, adjusting your hearing aids and trying out new ones, is a crucial part of overall health.

“Hearing connects us to our world,”  chief audiologist Jillian Price says.

“If we have untreated hearing loss, we withdraw because socialization becomes difficult or frustrating, especially in noisy areas.”

Many people feel like they lose their place in the world when they lose their hearing. Connecting with loved ones or participating fully in the world around you can be challenging.

Healthy hearing means staying connected with the people and places around you and being an active participant in each moment. When you hear better, you can be more fully a part of your surroundings.

Hearing is more than a sense, it’s also a social tool to be present in the moment.

“Treating hearing loss at its earliest stages is absolutely the best way to go,” Price says.

“Even at a mild loss, you’ll want to detect all those soft sounds you’re missing.”

Hearing loss has been associated with higher rates of depression, anxiety and social isolation.

“It leads to changes in confidence and self-esteem,” Price says.

“All of this is improved with better hearing. One of the other benefits of treating hearing loss is that you’re more engaged and active.”

Our hearing allows us to be part of everything. People who are struggling with their hearing tend to withdraw from loved ones and social situations through frustration and embarrassment. Not only do they suffer from it, their loved ones do as well.

Addressing your hearing issues head on doesn’t have to be a daunting task. Love your ears by protecting them against loud noises, going for regular hearing tests and checking to make sure your hearing aids are working right for you.

HearingLife, with locations across the country, offers free hearing tests. They also offer risk-free trials on hearing aids.

“Just try it,” Price says.

“So many people are pleasantly surprised by how great it is to actually hear everything again and the difference it makes in their everyday lives.”
