Saskatchewan Roughriders legend Darian Durant explains why Trevor Harris re-signed with the Green and White.
Durant explained to SportsCage host Barney Shynkaruk. "He wants to make sure he's in a situation that is easiest for him. I'm sure he gave the Riders a pretty friendly deal where they can go out and get some pieces around him that can help out with him achieving that goal."
According to 3DowNation insider Justin Dunk, Harris explained that his new deal with the team helps the team financially.
If you slot me in the top tier, it's a team-friendly deal. It's a correct deal for both sides," Harris said.
Harris has two Grey Cups on his resume, but both came as a backup. The first Grey Cup Harris won was in 2012 when the Toronto Argonauts defeated the Calgary Stampeders 35-22. The second came in 2016 when Harris was with the Ottawa Redblacks as the team defeated the Calgary Stampeders 39-33. When Harris was with the Argos, he was third on the depth chart behind Jarious Jackson and Ricky Ray, while in Ottawa, Harris backed up Henry Burris.
During the 2018 season, Harris had the chance to win the Grey Cup as a starter with the Redblacks, but Ottawa lost to the Stampeders 27-16. Statistically, that was Harris' best year in his CFL in regards to passing yards as it was the only season he eclipsed 5,000 yards with 5,116.
The closest Harris has taken the Riders to the Grey Cup was in 2024 when the team finished with a 9-8-1 record and lost to the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in the West Final 38-22. Harris' first season with the Green and White came in 2023, but it was cut short when he suffered a tibial plateau fracture in his right knee on July 15. The Riders missed the playoffs with a 6-12 record.
Harris told the SportsCage in a interviewwhich he injured this past season. Durant believes this is the perfect time to heal and rest.
"Make sure he's good before he starts a serious regimen with this training."
Harris injured his knee during Week 3 against the Hamilton Tiger-Cats and he did not return until Week 11 against the Montreal Alouettes.
